Krzysztof Komeda 'Astigmatic' & Tomasz Stanko Septet 'Litania Music of Krzysztof Komeda
Krzysztof KomedaAstigmatic (Power Bros Records 1998 CD reissue, Original 1965)
*Note this CD comes as CD-ROM, with a filmed interview of Sofia Komeda (Krzysztof's wife), but I have not included it here.
Komeda is a legend of the Polish jazz scene, who died tragically at the early age of 38. Komeda is generally credited for the rise of Jazz in Poland in the 50's. Although possibly better known for his many film scores including various works with Polanski, (notably in the West for Rosemary' Baby). This was a time in which certain filmakers chose to place emphasis on sound in virtual balance with images.
However, as a jazz pianist & composer he was best known for his free- jazz stylings, although arguably as a soloist not so. Yet it is his piano work the sets the tone & pace of each piece highlighting his often dramatic & certainly emotive compositions. And this is regarded by most as the pinnacle of his work.
Recorded: Warsaw, December 1965
Performed by:
Krzysztof Komeda - piano
Zbigniew Namyslowski - alto sax
Tomasz Stanko - trumpet
Guenter Lenz - bass
Rune Carlsson - drums

Tomasz Stanko Septet

Litania: The Music of Krzysztof Komeda (ECM Records 1997)
Stanko worked on all of Komeda's Polish soundtracks from 1964 onwards & despite occasional lineup changes for concerts & various other performances he was a constant from 1963. It is that unique association that brings this release together & attempts to peer into the shadowy realm of Komeda with 'darker' tracks such as Litania & Requiem.
All compositions: Krzysztof Komeda
Arrangements: Tomasz Stanko
Performed By:
Tomasz Stanko - trumpet
Brent Rosengren - tenor sax
Joakim Milder- tenor & soprano sax
Bobo Stenson - bass
Palle Danielsson - double bass
Jon Christensen - drums
Terje Rypdal - guitar*

Wow, so Tomasz Stanko is a quintet now eh? Great musician, I'm definitely going to give this one a go later tonight.
Thanks again, Moog!
Quin = 5 & Sep = 7; Here he's in a septet.
Anyway, I know you know this...I do have others where he's in a quartet, but none as a quintet.
Enjoy this one later on tonight when you've got it.
So does this mean you are back on board or are you only restricted with uploads? Regardless always good to see you about.
Cool Paxdude,
Toodalooh. :)
no matter how I try, this download service never works.
Anon:
Which one are you referring to & what country are you in?
I'm trying various hosts due to the new restrictive service offered by r/s.
Hail, Moog!
YES!!!
Danka!
I did manage to get "This is How..." from a visitor who heard my plea. It's great.
Anything else you choose to share would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry 'bout the connection. Ours can get slow, 'till I complained to our ISP, and then it seems better.
Good post i like a lot that.
you make me happy again like many times before. but on this special happy day, i have my permanent visa for Argentina. iam mucho happy. si a lot of happyness and then on top this beauty dobbel post gracias moog!!
No problems Chardman...it was a while back, but I don't like letting people down. Anyhow pleased to hear that was sorted for you.
Oh no....most Aust connections are slow c/w those in Europe or US. We are generally quick on the uptake of new technologies, but speedy broadband is not one of them - the size of the country is one of the main issues c/w population size.
Anyway I was on a certain speed but they cut me back (by a third) the company saying that their costs have risen & would no longer be able to provide that service. So either leave, accept a reduced speed or pay significantly more per month.
For the time being I've accepted the reduced rate, but am looking into other options. It's also harder for me as I'm no longer living in a Capital city. Therefore, the further you are from a major centre the less likely fast broadband will be rolled out.
I'm kind of in the hills, roughly 85klm (not miles) from this States Capital.
So I did write something to my provider just a cpl of days ago, but as of yesterday no reply & I haven't checked today.
Thanks.
CONGRATULATIONS Korpus,
You must be so pleased....And you've made me happy knowing this special news & indeed this post has added to this very important day for you.
Wunderbar, Merveilleux, Maravilloso!!!
Thanks for the Komeda. More please. More jazz please.
You are appreciated.
Cool 'Anon' your comments are kindly regarded also - thank you!
hey, nice post, looking forward to the music !!!
but... Deposit Files is so slow ? can't you try somewhere else ?
thx
PS : try the Polar Bear on my blog!
Aaah ok Stefan...was waiting to hear some respone about some of the new hosts I'm testing.
I actually found the same myself (but after posting this), it wasn't just slow but kept on cutting out.
Not to worry will forget about Deposit.
Merci et au revoir!
Hi there,
Thanks muchly for the uploads, though the Rapid Upload link isn't working for me It coughs up the correct URL and file info., but no download link - ???
Thanks for all your hard work on this blog!
Hi e.c./spinner...
I just tested & all seems to be working perfectly. I suspect by what you are saying here that you are missing where actually to d'load file from. If this is the case, although you see file info toward the bottom on the left hand side; top left is where you d'load. In grey it says Download File. It's a touch confusing having this separated from the Download Details & not well highlighted.
I hope this helps...
Cheers!
Cheers for the Komeda links mate!
I've been looking for Astigmatic for ages now, living in Cambridge, MA and the ratio of bookstores to record stores is atrocious - offset slightly by the excellent live music scene (Tomasz Stanko is playing here with his quartet in two weeks) :)
Love the pics on your site, always great to see a bit of pride taken in the natural beauty of our giant backyard, esp. by Aussies! You're making me homesick... btw, the pics of the rainforest look similar to those up Mt. Tambourine, is that your locale?
Keep up the good work, Moog, it's appreciated!
Hey JimmyJames, thsnk you for your comments - appreciated.
Would rather awesome if Stanko toured out here. I dont recall he's ever toured 'our' shores out here.
Not a bad guess (Mt.Tamborine), but I'm not on the Gold Coast, I'm on the Sunny Coast. :) Mt Tamborine & Gold Coast hinterland is lovely, but I loathe Gold Coast otherwise - high rise, high rise after high rise!
Glad you like the pics here. Is something new I've been trying out here. Unsure whether to mix them in with the music or possibly create a whole new blog just for pics, but that would mean more time on the computer (upkeep etc) & I don't think I can do this. We'll see...
Cheers!
