Patti Smith 'Tell It Like It Is' (Live 1996)

Patti Smith
Tell It Like It Is
(Live @ The Markethalle, Hamburg Germany Aug 1, 1996)
This is a superb quality live recording. The CD doesn't tell me who's in the band this particular tour, but if Lenny Kaye isn't playing guitar with Ivan Kral , I'd almost suggest it is Tom Verlaine, who played on her first album Horses & has toured with her on & off over her long career. Maybe it's Robert Quine, as I think (but can't positively remember) he played in her band the one time I saw her in the early '90s. It's rather hard to identify that wailing guitar sound, as distictive as it may be (any helpers)?

Although a fair amount of her 'later' material is played here (see comments for full listing), she does a great version of 'Dancing Barefoot' & a long expose' (10+ mins) of When Doves Cry.

All of her 'classic' CD's have been re-issued & remastered, but now they are being made available in dbl CD 'Legacy' versions with a 2nd cd full of live or otherwise unavailable material. Horses has the entire album live on the 2nd disc with Flea playing bass. These are definitely worth searching out for fans & newcomers alike. Please see your local music store (Arista records, now JRecords)!

My guess is it's Verlaine.. great stuff.

My contact details on my blog, on the 'About The Captain' page, by the way.

Aaah, some fellow Patti fans - good to hear. :)

I have another that's from 1975 - 'awesome' tracklist, but quality nowhere near the same as this one, which must have come from the mixing desk or else somebody was using a DAT recorder standing in a prime position.

Thanks Captain for your input. It really sounds like Veraline in patches, but I just don't think there is enough for it to actually be him, so I'm kinda leaning to Robert Quine who seems to manage taking a backseat in a band setting, but when called upon can really make his guitar sing.

Thanx Robert...has been sometime; great to see you about.

As you can see from my comments above I have a Patti Smith on CD (strangely enough) from '75, which I only think is only ok quality. My CD tells me it is from WBAL studios (May 28) NY. So the one you've referred me to says it is as WSAI studios & quality is good.

Xclnt - personally looking forward to this.

As for Patti Smith & Television I think I have that one (quality below average I'd say). I like Patti Smith, but I LOVE Television. I hope I have most if not all things Television. :)

Hopefully, some others might take the time to read through these comments to find these links.

I know most people just like to quickly d'load a few things, but those really interested (I think) take some time look through the comments & even leave a one or two themselves.

Cheers out...

Damn...my CD actually says WBAI, I think it's the same, but the one you have comes as only a single file.

If you like I can up it for you with tracks properly split (I have the origainl CD).

But I don't think the quality is all that great, at least not c'pared with the one posted.

I guess in the old days, prior to digital you'd say it was ok, but the 'boots' coming out today could almost be real studio quality (well almost).

Let me know if you're interested Robert.

See ya!

Moog:

I think i prefer the Single file option when it comes to a "Live" Recording.

If you could rip with a better bitrate..that would be wonderful :)

Robert

Ya...I'm not so sure Robert ripping with a better bit rate will help with this one.

As previously mentioned I'm not that excited about the quality of it, whereas the one posted I think is v.good.

Maybe I'll put in on the 'back' burners & save for another time; then I'll rip according to your request.

Cheers!

Nice music, my first taste of Patti Smith.

And here's a cherry:

"CD, KTS 1997

Bootleg of the Smith show recorded at the Paleo Festival, Nyon, July 26, 1996 where Verlaine played with the Patti Smith Band."

Aaah a BIG thanx Pax for this detective work, but this is the album listed below & says:

"Bootleg of the Smith show recorded at the Markethalle, Hamburg, Germany, August 1, 1996 where Verlaine played with the Patti Smith Band".

So you've solved the mystery Tom V was playing with the band then. I thought I could recognise that rather distinctive guitar sound!

Brilliant.
