The Only Ones "Why Don't You Kill Yourself" The CBS Recordings (2 CD Set)
Oldies come forward this is for you. Newbies unfamiliar with this English 'New Wave' band this is simultaneoulsy for you; an opportunity to hear this seminal band. I say 'New Wave' as this is the genre they were classed in at the time. Sure the band had all the necessary hallmarks, for one Peter Perrett (vocals, guitar) was a notorious heroin addict & just couldn't get his act together despite his obvious songwriting talent & yes clearly they were of that era. Yet, wordplay skills, balladry, unique vocal talent were quite unlike other UK bands at that time. John Perry (lead guitar) had quite a disctinctive style & sound & he went on to play with other bands & become quite an important session musician amongst other things.
Certainly they were very influential for other bands even to this day (Libertines, Blink-182), you get it virtually all here. Despite the below average cover art, the liner notes are decent making this a worthy package for those new to this band or otherwise those who do not have the bulk of their material on vinyl (or CD) including 7" Peter & The Pets singles.
You can buy this set here or via your local music store of choice.

*** If anybody has Peter Perrett's solo work from the mid 90's I'd be very interested in a bit of a listen. Cheers!

Yeah Moog! Love the ONLY ONES, this is the most I've ever seen of their stuff in one collection, thanks!
hey moog P,
I never forget their concert in Enschede (Holland) 1979... I felt like wrapped in cotton wool... great!
cheers
Rad. I love you. Can't wait for disc 2...
RYP...wish they'd have visited out here. One of those bands I'd really have loved to see, but never got the opportunity.
Thanx for your report here; certainly keeps their legendary status in tact for me!
G'day Vaughn this is a fine set containing all of their 3 'real' albums together, plus some extras.
However, the album 'Remains' that was released posthumously in the early-mid 80's & I thought was pretty good at the time has no tracks included, which I guess is fair enough!
No probs 'anon'...on its way now!
Hi MP,bought the 12'' of Another Girl Another Planet during my sojourn in London many moons ago.........just about wore out the grooves....great single!!!..........it still lurks somewhere in my piles of vinyl....but that's all I've heard of these guys ...so,looking forward to hearing this compilation...thanx
Great Dub D...I remember the 12" & I actually think I have that too, but a promo on BLUE vinyl. *lol* Those were the days!
It was an xlnt single & they still live on the back of that to a large extent, but they do have more to offer. I hope you enjoy...
Cheers!
Like Dub Dentist I did only know "Another Girl, Another Planet" - so I am curious about their other work. Thanks for sharing!
Aaah xclnt Zero G...Actually, I'm quite surprised how this band got under the radar of so many people, other than 'Another Girl...' single. I was really into them & have most of their stuff still on vinyl.
Maybe this can instroduce them to a whole new group of potential fans!
Errr, that should read 'introduce'. *lol*
a great band, an incredible composer. too bad his habit killed his chances on the big game. they should be as big as the pretenders.
oh, two gossips: the libertines are used to play "another girl" live and some say that's even a recorded version. and, on a poll on best songs of all time, blink 182's drummer chose "another girl" as the best punk song of all times (sic!). maybe they aint done so bad at all...
keep the good work and the best for ya,
julio.
Thank you Julio...I haven't heard The Libertines version (but made mention of it in the post), but I have heard Blink's effort. I can think of a fair few other bands who've covered this track, plus others such as Whole of the Law (e.g Luna).
Yes, shame Peter couldn't get over his habit, but when you think about it quite amazing he did what he did musically if by all reports his habit was as bad as reported.
Funny, when you think about their music they hardly seem Punk, yet they were basically classed in that genre, although to me more New Wave.
Thanks Julio & best out to you mate!
Hi moogpower,
I've posted 'Woke Up Sticky' by Peter Perrett in the One on my blog. Check it here.
Aaaah thank you will do!!!
muy bueno
Aaaah thank you Black...
Apreciado!!
I was thinking of posting this!
Thank you for your post on my blog about Isaac Hayes! It's probably the best comment left ever... Or maybe just my favorite? Who Knows?
Very impressive blog and impressive record collection. Not exactly my thing, all this instrumental music, I like singers too much... and just plain good songs. But somewhere I can see you do between your posts of the Only Ones and Chuck Prophet. May I recommend Robyn Hitchcock?
Keep up the good work and no worries, mate! (by the way, I spent 4 weeks in Melbourne last summer and loved every bit of them, I fell in love with the entire country. Plus I was listening constantly to the Saints, Radio Birdman and Kylie Minogue... and Bill Hicks. Good soundtrack for a stay there.)
Well I'm a Robyn Hitchock fan...have been for (I loathe to say this), well over 20yrs!
My music taste is rather varied, but as for my blog I try & post what I think others are not posting.
So, often it may seem there is little theme as I can go from classical & jazz through to avant-garde styles to some hardcore stuff. But it's all my music & all what I like. As for a theme, I still think there is a rhythm to my posts. :)
Well, I maybe partial but I'd have to say Melbourne is the best city within Aus. It's not as aloof as Sydney & maybe not as pretty, but is far more worldly & far, far friendlier. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay there!
Well your listed artists above are kinda weird...Just like I might post some Only Ones & then some jazz or classical stuff, you've got The Saints & Radio Birdman (some of my old favs) & then in the same breath Kylie Minogue? I've got to say it's just wonderful.
Good on ya...& I hope to catch up with you again sometime in the near future.
Cheers!
Well to tell you the truth, I was also listening to The White Stripes who had just released Get Behind Me Satan and Bruce Springsteen "Devils and Dust". In Melbourne I found these "Dirt Cheap CDs" store and I just went crazy. I think I bought over 30 CDs in less than 4 weeks. But it was just to say that I really like some Australian bands! And yeah, I like pop and disco as well and I love Kylie Minogue.
I will translate the record covers list so you can understand. And I included some comments.
But I totally understand what you're saying about posting the music you don't see anywhere else. The stuff I post is usually done in the same state of mind. I don't necessarely post the best albums of an artist but albums I haven't seen on other blogs. (although I haven't been so "out there" lately so maybe I miss out on some.)
Funny what you wrote about Robyn Hitchcock because although I've read his name many times before, I bought my first CD of him less than a year ago. And now, I have 7 of his! And counting.
And I'll conclude with also a funny T-shirt anecdote: my favorite band is probably the Beach Boys. And when I found out that Brian Wilson finally concluded "Smile", I went nuts. And a tour was announced a year almost in advance. But only UK dates. So I bought a ticket for the concert in Glasgow. To find out a few weeks later that there was going to be a concert in Paris. But I didn't regret going: it was a fun trip altogether and the concert was amazing. As a souvenir I bought a T-shirt... and to this day (2 & 1/2 years ago) I still haven't worn it yet. It's really silly but I want to keep it intact. Us, music lovers, there is got to be something wrong with us. Somewhere, inside.
Later
The Mike from Funhouse
G'day Mike...I think you might stretch me in regard to disco, but I think you might already know I like lots of funk.
Where were you shopping? JB Hi-Fi at a guess? Either in the city or Chappel St. South Yarra/Prahran?
Robyn Hitchock is one of those artists that just grows on you. I got into him in the early Soft Boy days, so I've kind of followed his career ever since, but I DO NOT have everything by him.
Mike...I hear what you're saying, but be proud & wear your T-shirt from time to time, you'll feel good, plus a few washes will not hurt it.
Best to you & enjoy your break,
Au revoir. :)
