A Balkan Introduction (Gypsy 'Funk') 'Kocani Orkestar, Taraf de Haidouks & Mahala Rai Banda

Kocani Orkestar
Alone At My Wedding (Craw25 ,2002)
This band hails from Kocani (from the New Republic of Macedonia 'ex-Yugoslavia) brass band with a muscular rhythm section showcasing tracks played by Gypsy bands during Macedonian weddings. Their music is based on various gypsy tunes originating from a number of Balkan parts.
Don't be too worried about the fact the music is intended for weddings, there is obviously loads of high spririted dancing. I certainly like this album.

Taraf de Haidouks (Band of Brigands)

Honourable Brigands, Magic Horses and Evil Eye
(Craw 13, 1995)

Taraf de Haidouks are currently the most significant and most famous Gypsy ensemble in the world. They are a group of traditional & multi-generational musicians from the small town of Clejani South of Bucharest. On this particular release the band has 22 members.

Sure this is folk music, but not in a dry sense, this is music to entertain & have fun. Some tracks on this disc are slower than can be heard on other albums & this reflects the sorrow of the social & political life in Romania over the greater part of the 20th Century.

Taraf de Haïdouks had never performed outside their native region before being discovered by Stepháne Karo and Michel Winter, two young Belgian music fans who fell in love with their music during a trip to Romania in 1990. Not long after their 'discovery' they began touring & it wasn't all that long before they were playing sell out tours the world over. Even music magazines such as 'Mojo' have devoted many pages including a 4 page article to this disctinctive band of artists. Truly potent music from the hardest working band in Eastern Europe!

Mahala rai Banda (Noble Band from the Ghetto)
Self Titled (Craw 31, 2004)
The band formed in the gypsy ghetto's (Mahala) of Bucharest & are an all star 'funk' band that blends together the traditional gyspy sound with a highly energetic brass band. Some of young(er) musicians here are related to Taraf de Haidouks & also contain retired soldiers who originate from Moldavia. The group manages to combine wedding tunes, military music, belly-dancing music, Far Eastern styles and harmonies, as well as pop, jazz and rock. Another fun release that possibly may not be for the true gypsy music purist?

However, not being overly knowledeable here & those in Europe especaily who most probably will have a much greater understanding than I, may find some of the tracks here to have too much of a Westernised feel. Nonetheless, it seems to me that much of what gypsy music is all about is incorporating various music styles in the gyspy framework & with this in mind I think this is another fairly strong release of its kind.

Further, I should add that I feel for this debut release, the collaboration with Shantel
("electrogyspy whizz") is a conscious effort to garner a younger audience for the ever increasing popularity of this music.

Accoring to the label's website these CD's should all be available or at least via order from your local music outlet. However, you can find a mail order service from the label (if you prefer) right here.

***Note: you all need to know that Robert Johnsson over at PunchDrunk (a rockin' fine blog) has added to the Taraf de Haidouks selection x 3. The 3rd disc is the one that's here (at different host), the other 2 are completely different. Musique Des Tsiganes De Roumanie was their first release & Dumbala Dumba the 3rd.

Please be generous & thank Robert Johnsson for this BIG effort for without his time & care you would not have the opportunity to listen (before buying) to the others albums. Cheers RJ.

****(27th)I don't know what's happened to the formatting here, but after adding the above note it's all gone weird. I can't fix it, unless I pull the`post apart & clear all HTML. I don't feel like doing that now, so please accept a strange looking post.

hi again, moogpower
this is a great s-e-european brass summit! kocani is an absolutely amazing live band, and dancing in front of the whole bunch of blowers is so much fun! i've never heard the haidouks, although they seem so popular and common, and the third is totally unknown to me.

thanks, moogpower, for a great "step to another world music" (frith)

Yes, I guess you & others like yourself in the world of culture that is Europe may find this a little bland or common, but as you say so rightly say Kocani are all about fun & the others groups are too. Haidouks are the most famous (as far as I'm aware), but this disc is a little older so is not seen about so often, although according to the label is still in print.

I hope I can bring some new 'old' sounds to those who have never heard this kind of music before; 'cause really once you hear, you usually like it.

I've been rather busy here Mr Lucky & have had little time for this 'thingy' & maybe going away for just a few days, will work that out in the morning. However, if I do stay here I'll probably have limited (very) time until the end of the week.

Dank Herr M.

Tarafs de Haidouks is great... I haven't heard this album but I don't see how it would be possible for me not to like it...
Other stuff sounds pretty interesting too though I have to admit the "wedding" stuff scares me a little (is it similar to the wedding's music in Kusturica's movies ?)

Ho, it remind me of a sweet techno album (party music) which is sadly fucked after a friend used it for a freesbie.... Maybe you have it, it's Max Pashm "Weddings, Bar-mitzvahs & Funerals".

and a sweet post today that was! MP rules!!!

Thanks for expanding my musical horizon once again! I have heard about those records but wasn´t able to listen to them until now. Thanks a lot!
Shantel is here in Germany very busy as a DJ with this kind of south-eastern europe crossover dance sounds. Maybe I step by next time he plays here in my town.

Aaah very nice Stefan - thank you! I understand that the wedding stuff may sound a bit scary, but I think you'll be able to get into it, still very upbeat, maybe a little more 'traditional' than some others?

Max Pashm "Weddings, Bar-mitzvahs & Funerals"...damn never heard of it - sounds awesome, shame it's only good as a flying disc these days. :) Hey, but I do really like frisbee; such Summer time fun.

Cheers mate.

Well Zero...if you want to have loads of fun (I'd imagine), I'd think it would be well worth checking out Shantel.

I'm just wary that this crossover thing is just a passing fad & he along with the music will faze out. However, I think the more traditional stuff is definitely here to stay, like it's been for Centuries.

I hope you enjoy!!!

MiltMonster...cool, you might like to start with the most famous of them all Taraf de Haidouks & work from there if you like.

I suspect those in Europe are more likely to be familiar with these bands c/w with those in US or us out here.

Ciao.

G'day Chardman...funny, Balkan music going on over in the States - what gives? (I thought you guys were only into 'home grown musical culture' - just joking - Aussie sarcasm) *lol*

Very pleased to hear of your interest in this kind of music - you clearly have ears for all kinds, but I knew you had a diverse range of musical interests & tastes.

Some of this stuff would fit nicely on your 'radio station' - there are some sure fire 'hits' & loads of fun to be had!

Adios...

Well, I cleaned the Max Pashm real good and tried ripping it... it worked!

the thing is the album's not as good as I recalled... the world influenced tracks (with guests on cello, violin or clarinet) are sweet. the more trance oriented tracks are just okay...

At 8:31 PM, August 23, 2006, Blogger MoogPower said...

Aaah well - at least it's playable - cello, clarinet & violin I'm a bit of a sucker for just like the oud & also bandoneon (so long as it's done well).

Funny about trance...a lot of my mates were into it quite a while back, but having moved from Melbourne I've lost that city influence & to me that 'scene' has almost died out; it was just something of the times, but far from lasting.

Cheers mate!

My neck of the woods has become rather diverse; we have little pockets of people from former Soviet countries, an Indian Sikh population as well as a growing little Balkan community. A lot of Bosnians immigrated to my area during the war after ethnic Muslims were granted refugee status due to the cleansings in Serajavo, etc...
There's even a Bosnian tavern that features live music! I think a lot of people got caught up in the Northward movement after California became way too populated.

G'day Chardman...I don't know your area, but I must say diversity is good. So long as everybody is living peacefully (& there should be no reason why this should not be so), I reckon it not only increases peoples awareness, but they then become introduced to new cultures, including food, music etc which makes for a much 'richer' lifestyle.

As for California - I'll yet you have it. Been there a few times & I don't think I'll be missing very much if I don't go there again. I suppose for those who are looking for all the trappings of the capitalist world it's the place to be; that is if one can indulge themselves in the way of life.

Oh, whatever you think is best. You can post at yours if you want or if you don't think it's suitable I'll add on to this post?

As I say please don't rush yourself to do this whenever you have the time/space available.

I know that out here in Australaia I must have one of the SLOWEST interent connections so things are never quick. Most Australians are stuck with slow internet comparec with Europeans/Americans, but I can't do much about it unless I want to pay $100's per month.

Anyway nothing you can do about this, but unfortunately I can only post things so fast (that is slow).

Cheers RJ,

Enjoy your weekend!
