William Elliott Whitmore 'Ashes to Dust'

William Elliott Whitmore
Ahses To Dust

Get your 'sour mash' out, head onto your 'porch', chew some tobacco & you'll know where this guy is coming from & maybe even where he's been. William Elliott Whitmore is the current face of country style folk/blues. With a voice to match the very best blues artists of yesteryear & one Tom Waits may have wanted to have; it's so deep & gravely & belies his youth. Hailing from a horse farm in Iowa much of the songs seem to stem from dusty back roads & the mirky waters of the Mississippi. I bring this to your attention now on the back of The Boys Next Door, not that they are in any way similar, but for the imagery & lyrical content Nick Cave often brings into his music.

This is American roots music, often little more than a deep dark voice & a banjo. It's an 'ode' to humanity that is most often crushed & dilapidated.

This is Will's 2nd full length album (2005) & he's recently released a 3rd. Support 'young' Will & get all his albums here.

Funny enough, I just had that CD in my hands last night when I was looking for some blues to play.

And funny enough Part Two: I think much of Whitmore's background "clicks and clangs" textures remind me of mid-period Tom Waits' production style.

Well...funny enough I was thinking of you when posting.

I was trying to tie something in with the previous BND post & immediately grabbed this.

It also had me thinking is this in any way Appalachian in terms of music? (Well I suppose geographically not exactly). :)

Grrr...Vaughn...I only saw your first comment when I replied...seems your 2nd & my initial reply were simultaneous.

Interesting...I've read many reviews about Whitmore's vocals & Waits, but nothing in regard to production style. (You've got me off guard)...You could be onto something there, it really hadn't occured to me before!
