The National 'Live Paris, April 29, 05 '

The National
Live Paris, April 29, 2005
With Clogs recently posted & that bands connection with The National, I thought I'd post something for their fans. This is a live recording in Paris; quality is v.good. Please note: this is not my original, so all credit goes out to the original person who made this available. (As usual see comments for track list).

The National are:
* Matt Berninger – vocals
* Aaron Dessner – bass, guitar
* Bryce Dessner – guitar
* Bryan Devendorf – drums
* Scott Devendorf – guitar, bass

(Images are copyrighted by their respective owners)

Releases:
* The National (2001)
* Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (2003)
* Cherry Tree EP, 7 tracks 5 new, plus 1 live version & collaboration w/Padma Newsome from Clogs (2004)
* Alligator (2005)
* Lit Up EP w/'lit up' remix (2005)

You can support this superb band and buy the albums from their official online store here. Do yourself a favour (as was famously said each week on Australian television during the 70's - early 80's; I know that was bad)!

I didn't get into The National until ALLIGATOR. At first, I didn't know what to make of them, there seemed to be a "everything but the kitchen sink" approach to their music. But after a few listens (and I felt compelled to listen) I was mesmerized by the band. I now own their catalogue. They are strange and familiar at the same time. Great new band, certainly one of the best of the new century so far.

Do you know of the band RICHMOND FONTAINE?

My feelings with The National were the same ones as Vaughn say, though Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers got a pair of fantastic songs that i ever relate to the mighty Arab Strap. The thing that makes Alligator so briliant and a giant step from the previous albums rest in the drumer imaginative work. Great band, really.

cheers!

I agree Vaughn & Lif at first it is hard to know what to make of them, but from first listens they were also compelling to me, hence the band got more airplay.

I think this is the hallmark of a great 'rock' band, not simplistic & one that 'asks' the listener to come back for more based on vitality & possible a little intrigue.

As for Richmond Fontaine I do know of them, but don't own any of their albums. They've been around for a while & I sense they'd be classed with that 'alt' country kind of thing. (I really dislike such categorisations).

Possibly whilst you've been following this kind of music closer than me, I've been more inclined to delve into the 'slowcore' (another sub-genre term that irks me) sound.

Do you know IDAHO at all?

Just starting to get into Jason Molina now. Gee in recent times they've been many vocalists with that kind of strung out Neil Young style vocals, but this is actually Neil at times. Great guitar work too. I can hear some clever lyrics, but will need to become more familiar before I can start singing along with confidence. :)

Fear not that's A-ok in my books & his works will be very high up on my list to purchase when I next go into a record store. Thank you very much!

Hey Vaughn...just confirming re. the Jason Molina please. That is it's all Magnolia Electric Co. & is taken from 3 albums:
What Comes After The Blues(2005)
Trials & Errors (2004)
Songs:Ohio (2003)

Cheers.

I think that covers it. I've collected some live boots over the last year and I may have mixed a few of those into the set, but maybe not. It's a collection I made for myself originally. All the songs are Magnolia Electric Co. though.
LIF's comment about The National's drummer is dead-on. That guy is awesome in that Stephen Morris sort of way.

Richmond Fontaine are a strange band. They work in a typical country rock band set-up but Willy Vlautin's (the band leader) songs are so involving lyrically that you feel like your peaking in on the dark corners of some poor souls life. Runaways, small time crooks, lovers gone wrong, all looking for ways to repent but unable to find it. Heady stuff, you find yourself haunted for days thinking about these people, hoping they don't exist, but knowing deep down that they really do. It's the kind of things Tom Waits did well before he went totally bizarre after RAIN DOGS.

Thanks Vaughn lyrically they sound quite amazing & definitely worth searching out. Really finding it quite fascinating learning about all these different artists.

Just out of interest Vaughn sounds like you've totally written off Waits post Rain Dogs. His last cd Real Gone was a genuine return to form as far as I was concerned! And unusually he didn't play an keyboards; the first ever Waits album without.

No I haven't written him off. I just think he isn't what he used to be and that's neither bad or good, just different. Waits is one of the most distinctive voices of our generation. He's followed his muse and often I've followed along with him. I have REAL GONE but truth be told I'd rather listen to A FOREIGN AFFAIR or BLUE VALENTINE when he wrote songs for songs sake instead of vehicles for studio trickery and gimmicks. But that's me.

Well I don't know what to say Vaughn; speechless! It rings true for me too & I'd also like to throw in Swordfishtrombones & most of Heartattack & Vine.

I think as you say beyond Rain Dogs the stytle of the music changed dramatically & whilst some of the lyrics were/are still strong, they are no longer the kind you become so enamoured with that you tend to know every single lyric.

I still give him credit for progression & exploring his artistic abilities.

By way of contrast if everything he had done until now was Blue Valentine 'we' would most likely be bored.

One last thing, most Waits fans I know were of the same mind about REAL GONE: We all thought it was a welcome return to form BUT we also felt we had heard it all before.

G'day Vaughn,

Well in terms of hearing it all before I guess it's a little hard for that not to be the case when an artist has been around 30+ yrs.

I suppose he has to live up to very high expectations & that must also be rather difficult. However, I understand where you're coming from!

Hello Mathieu...WoW fantasitc site - xclnt work!!

As for this live recording as mentioned in the small review it is not my original work & credit goes to the original person who made the recording available.

I like to try & present 'new' or little known bands & hope by way of making them better known people will go out & BUY their albums.

I would have thought you might have access to some wonderful live recording of The National being their photographer? Let's hope that by spreading the word they become better known & appreciated by a much wider audience who support them; see them in concert etc.

To open the file you need to type in the p/w. It is:
MoogPower
And it is case sensitive.

Cheers!
