Hüsker Dü 'Zen Arcade'
Husker Du
Zen Arcade
It's hard to know what to write sometimes in the space I allocate for various reasons. For example here I think to myself what can I write about Hüsker Dü that hasn't already been written or what people do not already know. However, then I need to remind myself that I'm posting this for those who may not know much about this album or even this band.It was 1984 when Hüsker Dü released this dbl album. It was their third release. Led by Bob Mould (guitar) & Grant Hart (drums) with Greg Norton (bass) this Minneapolis trio were genuine leaders in the hardcore/punk scene, although in later releases they would abandon their earlier pedigree & move into a more 'alt' rock driven sound especially heard on Flip Your Wig.
Believe it or not this is considered punks first ever 'concept' album; primarily relating to the anguish of growing up, it's punks first double album as it was previously thought to be totally absurd. And standing firm with punk tradition this dbl album was recorded in ~80 mins. Hüsker Dü whether credit is given to them or not clearly paved the way for bands such as The Pixies, Nirvana & even Sonic Youth to make their presence known in the late 80's & beyond.
The final 13 minute track on this album (all the others are short, more in the atypical punk style) has all the hallmarks of what Sonic Youth are about; noise, fuzz etc. And let's not forget lengthy instrumental tracks were not at all consistent with that punk ethos! And really it seems despite the fact that much about this album is punk or considered so at the time, much of it appears to be about subverting genres by way of constructing something disguised as punk, yet going well beyond the standard punk limitations.
Just out of interest it was Bob Mould who penned the majority of the punk/hardcore style tracks & Grant Hart the more poppier tunes & were at times likened to a punk version of Lennon & McCartney. By todays standards this dbl album may seem somewhat tame, but there is little doubt that 22yrs ago this release was groundbreaking & is to this day considered one of the most influential albums in the punk rock scene, but also regularly listed in the music press as one of the best rock albums of all time.

well, this is some good shit... I've been following Bob Mould in all his projects for quite some time now... I have to admit Husker Dü's most chaotic you're providing here isn't my fav' material...
I have a weak spot for Candy Apple Grey (as commercial as some might judge it, it still has killer songs) and Sugar's debut album...
But I won't deny Zen Arcade's awesomeness in breaking eardrums with cleverness & class !
Another Good link from Moog Power ! Keep it coming !
G'day mate, you really have a way with words Stefan. Sometimes I feel rather ineffective when I read through some of the comments here & folk such as yourself sum things up so much better than I've just done!
I can certainly understand it not being your fav, it doesn't get very much airplay in my home these days, but I remember quite vividly when it was first released (I have the dbl vinyl album too) & I was left speechless. I saw them also in London just about this time & they were AWESOME.
Yeah I think by Candy Apple Grey they developed the style now know (although today it has no real meaning) as alternative.
Now, if only these damn hosts would let me upload. Morning time here now & since posted last night I can't get one of them to continue to completion without timing out. Merde!
i can say
keep suporting my memory´s and
the music i like.
Husker du in the time they made this album
si si i saw them in my hometown dutchieland Venlo and was awsome, great good
for now i gonna wait paitently for the link.
good boy Moog!!
Having problems making a link still Korpus. I have to go out very soon, but when I'm back I hope to have no more problems.
Please give me a few more hrs from the time you've left this message.
Yes, they were awesome live. I got to see them in London.
Gracias Korpus!
i gonna stay here for a few hours more si
but tell me Moog
how comes with the Australian part??
you lived in London England?
and moved to Australia or london Australia?
confused forever!
por favor!
I reckon this is one of my all time favourite releases...
I think what the Hüskers also gave to hardcore/ punk was the raw emotion that they conveyed and explored with themes that their more political contempories left aside.
As for the chaos, speed and noise: bring it on! In fact, this is pretty easy listening compared to their amphetamine fuelled early stuff (Land Speed Record, Everything Falls Apart, etc).
p.s. didn't SST label-mates & friends the Minutemen manage to beat Hüsker Dü to releasing the "1st double punk album" with the equally classic Double Nickels On the Dime?
Korpus....No I'm Australian, but lived in London England for roughly 18 months in the early-mid '80s.
Hope that makes things clearer for you. :)
Hey fusered,
Yes, agreed this is easier than their first 2 LP's, but I'd say here they really managed to fuse many of their ideas into this package. The 2 earlier albums were definitely rawer, but less developed.
As for their 'peers' the Minutemen 'Double Nickels in the Dime' is another classic of its time & genre & I'd say their best album.
In regard to the timing of this dbl album I think Hüsker Dü's dbl was released first, but in the same year, although without checking I can't say with 100% surety.
Shame about D. Boons death 'cause they were reallycreating some headlines & positive reactions!
Cheers.
i never considered hudu a punk band they were the most exciting band at time kinda like prince when he first appeared on the scene i was sorry to see them break up...hudu the first jam band ? possibly hart's solo intolerance contains the best dylan side that bob never wrote "all my senses" thanks again
Hey Jwillaum...firstly thanx for your comments - it's always xclnt to meet new folks & those willing to partake by way of a few comments!
As for HuDu being a 'punk' band maybe 'hardcore' is a better description especially of this & then prior 2 releases. As for them being a 'jam' band I think that the length of tracks alone precludes them from being classed within such a genre.
Funny, you mention Prince 'cause back then I was certainly not a fan, but by the late 80's I definitely was!
Unfortunately, I never followed Hart's solo career, but did to a point with Bob Mould. I get the feeling it's worth searching out some of Hart's solo works 'cause it's just possible I've been missing out. Will look into that...
Cheers!
Grant Hart's INTOLERANCE is the best solo album to come out of Husker Du. The song "2541" (covered splendidly by Robert Forster) is just an amazing break-up song but it only one of many on that record. And the organ work on that entire outing...oh my!
Grant never again came close to the power of that album.
Never really thought of "All of My Senses" by Grant as a Dylan song though, it has more of an Eric Burden/Animals vibe to it to me.
G'day Vaughn...Hhhmmm, will look into Intolerance - thanx for the 'review'. Dylan/Animals vibe - either way sounds very good to me & something I'd never had considered prior to your discussions here.
And Vaughn...I just got RATTLESNAKES (deluxe edition was rather xpensive) & SUNDAY NIGHTS (the songs of Junior Kimbrough) as per your suggestion. Also I found WE ARE WOLVES (Fat Possum Records), plus got the first of THE TRIFFIDS reissues 'Born Sandy Devotional'.
It's the first in the series as it commemorates 20 yrs since it's original release. 24 bit remastering from original analogue tapes, 9 unreleased tracks & 42 page booklet with some older photo's & almost a diary like feel containing song notes, references for song & album titles etc; is xclnt.
I'll have to look for THE TRIFFIDS reissue here, the package sounds quite nice. Don't know WE ARE WOLVES. Enjoy your new stuff.
Did you get the reissue of RATTLESNAKES? If not, let me know and I'll help you out with the extras.
Vaughn...as per your original suggestion I got the deluxe reissue (dbl cd) version of Rattlesnakes - thank you for the offer re-the extras - it's the thought that counts. :)
As for The Triffids if you like maybe we can do a swap? The Triffids for Tom Verlaine, if it's readily available. Just a thought...
I haven't heard We Are Wolves yet, but I remember you saying that you have virtualy all FatPossum releases. I figured seeing the lable is effectively defunct I'd get We Are Wolves 'cause that was a release I didn't have on that label; just bolstering their stocks!
Don't forget Metal Circus that came out prior to Zen Arcade - which is also a classic - but like you said it all comes together sweetly on this...
As for Double Nickels by Minutemen wikipedia says this (even though doesn't ay which made it out 1st):
Initially meant to be a single album, the Minutemen had already recorded an album's worth of material in November of 1983 when they learned that their labelmates Hüsker Dü were about to release the double album Zen Arcade. In response, the Minutemen wrote an entire album's worth of material and recorded it in May of 1984. The group then mixed all of the newly recorded songs and remixed the songs recorded the previous November in one all-night session. (On the inside back cover of the double album's gatefold is the note, "Take that, Hüskers!"). The total cost for recording and mixing the entire double album was just over $1,000.00.
Anyhow, if you're after Grant Hart Intolerance I did a bit of digging and found it here as a rapidshare download: http://misha4music.blogspot.com/2005/12/grant-hart-ex-husker-du-intolerance.html
p.s. love the comment with the guy correcting his English.. :)
Yo, fusered...I've got Metal Circus, but nothing prior.
Damn wikipedia...what can't 'we' find out today at the touch of a button? :) However, are they always correct; I guess in some things we'll just have to take their word for it!
Your detective skills are first class - digging around as you put, something that generally I don't get the time for, so a BIG cheers out to you for this. Some mighty fine work!!
Looking forward to more of your comments (informative or otherwise) in the future & other 'snoop' works.
Ciao.
A swap sounds like a good idea. I'll should be hitting a record store in the next week (the closest, decent store is about 40 min. away. I live in a nice, but remote area outside of Boston). I'll pick-up the Verlaine CDs (you want both I assume). At some point email me your address.Thank you!
Vaughn, I'm not sure I have your email addy; I think RYP only gave me your snail mail.
If you want to email him & ask for my email that's possibly the best (easiest) way?
I understand about time travel these days. Having always lived central ~8klm from city centre (Melb), I'm now in a similar situation to you, deciding a cpl yrs ago to get out of the big smoke.
Now I'm in the mountains in a very picturesque region & 'we' are all very happy here. It was felt if things didn't work out or we were unhappy the city would still be there!
Hey guys...I know this album, INTOLERANCE, I think I had just forgotten it was by Grant Hart. 'All of my Senses' was a huge hit; well on non-commercial radio! The Main & 2541 weren't far behind...was an album of sing-along good time hits!!! It even had neo-psychedelic flair with Roller Rink & its swirling keyboards.
I remember this disc well. Cheers!
ihave to tell its mega upload, grrrrr
for me.
i try already a month and a half to download an album from paxdiero blog.
gracias megaupload for discrimination!!
it´s not you Moog, your the best!
but sometimes i like to complain too.
gracias
Gracias Korpus...I remember some time ago when I asked the question about sites people preffered, I recall you stated 'mega' was not good for people in Argentina.
I had NO choice with this one at the time. I tried most of the night with r/s & then some of the others I've been using lately. I couldn't get any of them to work until the following afternoon when I tried mega. Was very frustrating for me; I think you were even waiting for this while I was trying to get a host to work!
I'll do a 'mirror' for this in the upcoming days for people such as yourself who are still having some probs. I'll put it up with the post so you & others can see it.
Ciao.
i apriciate Moog but you dont have to do that effort.
i understannd your thing and you already mention.
you have the concience how things come.
gracias for that anyway.
dont worry
i come back any way moog!!
good good boy!!
Hi. Good to find this. However it seems a password is required to unpack this file.I'm probably stupid but I can't see the password on your site. I always regreted not getting this when it came out so I hope I can hear it in comfort and in full for the first time!
I just found the password. i couldn't see for looking. Thanks.
NO probs Goeff...glad to hear you managed to get things organised. Cheers!
