Rachel's 'The Sea and the Bells'
Rachel'sThe Sea and the Bells
Classical post-rock might be a way to describe this instrumental group of musicians (17 on this release); although the violinist, bassist & pianist form the mucleus & collectively are known as Rachel's. Jason Noble was an original member in Rodan (guitar/vocals) & helped form Rachel's after their demise (if anybody remembers them I have 1 album). The music here is certainly moving & overall somewhat haunting. In a way this music is unaffected by time or era & so will most likely sound just as good in years (decades) to come. The diversity of instrumentation from traditioinal (e.g violin/cello/piano) to more obscure sounds (e.g saw, linen sheet, bells) keeps the listener's interest level high. The packaging is quite beautiful, although somewhat sombre, which sets the scene for the music contained within. The booklet makes mention that the title The Sea & The Bells (EL MAR Y LAS CAMPANAS) was inspired by the book by Pablo Neruda (1973) & translated by William O'Daly (1988). He was a Chilean poet/author, Nobel Prize winner for literature (1971) & diplomat. For those who are familiar with Rachel's, but not necessarily this album, it certainly will not disapppoint. Others whom may enjoy instrumental music, verging at times toward classical ambient, but clearly unaffected by various trends will like this & most likely be eager to hear more from Rachel's.

Hi Moog,
Here's what I promised you. Let me know what you think about it. Great news about The Triffids albeit bittersweet and all. Nice to know their back catalogue is being taken care of too.

Very nice...thank you Vaughn. Looking forward to having a listen to this band (this guy), certainly seems as if it's going to be the sort of music I'll really like! Will get this right away. Cheers.
I do think it's good news regarding The Triffids, but I'm not sure this will be a permanent move. Martin for one is a full time Bad Seed. I think (judging from the interview), it has taken them all a long while to get over Dave's tragic death & now they are at least ready (or ready as they'll ever be) to give back to those that have supported them over the years.
The back catalogue stuff should be out very soon (after some sort of delay already) & if done well w/extra tracks & 'properly' re-mastered they will be worth purchasing. Otherwise my records will still surfice, but I am quite confident these cd's will be put together with high standards in mind.
Ciao.
GG'day Vaughn...I got the album yesterday right after leaving the message above for you, but so far have not had a chance t ogive it a good spin; only listened for just a few minutes to get an idea of the sound.
From just that small snippett I can only say it sounds very mellow, but will let you know about it once I've had a good listen.
Thanks once again...
Cheers!!
It is pretty mellow, Lanterna has 5 CD's and SANDS is typical but a tad more quiet than some of the other stuff. I do think it's one of the stronger CDs musically although I like most of what I hear by him (Henry Frayne). Good quiet time music.
PS. I'm really liking that PANICS stuff you passed our way, the guitar work on that is nice and inventive, thanks again.
Hey Vaughn...I've had a little more of a listen. Yes, it is mellow, but I think gentle or delicate might be better words to describe the music. Very light & breezy for warm summer days maybe! Thanks, will obviously take some more time to fully get into it, but I will continue to listen.
And thanks for the Panics update...I think that album was one of my favs of 2005.
Cheers!
Can anybody re-up the album? I've been itching to give this record a spin.
